Costa Rica is a small country in Central America with a population of just under 5 million. It is the most stable country in the region politically and economically. Nearly half of the population lives in the central valley, an urban sprawl that includes the national capital, San Jose, four of the seven provincial capitals, and a number of other smaller cities.
Six of the current eight churches in the district are in the central valley, the other two are several hours north towards the border with Nicaragua. There are also four church planting projects in various stages of development.
The pastors include four ordained elders and three ministerial candidates. Four of the churches have recently started schools for leaders with many lay people interested in studying. The priorities for the district are: developing leaders, planting churches, strengthening FM identity, and economic sustainability.
The district leader, Victor Quesada, also pastors the Montecillos FMC. Dr. Hiuberth Zapata, pastor of the Peniel Church in Costa Rica, also serves as district leader for neighboring Nicaragua.
Over the years connections from Costa Rica resulted in the FMC being started in four other countries in the region, as well as a new ministry targeting the beach communities of Central America (see Shoreline District).
