In land area, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It has a population of 6.5 million; about 2.5 million people live in the metropolitan area of Managua, the capital city. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas, after Haiti.
A network of seven Free Methodist churches ministers in Nicaragua. All are in the greater Managua area, five of them within the city itself. Two of the churches have schools that provide education to a total of 620 students. International Child Care Ministries provides sponsorship for about 10% of the children. The schools are a beacon of hope in very impoverished surroundings.
The district is ably led by Dr. Hiuberth Zapata. He is originally from Nicaragua, but has lived and ministered for many years in neighboring Costa Rica. He continues to pastor the Peniel church in Alajuela, Costa Rica while making regular trips to oversee the work in Nicaragua.
Several years ago the Seminario Bíblico de Nicaragua was started with help from pastors in Costa Rica. It provides a basic course of study for lay leaders and ministerial candidates. The first class graduated in 2015 with 14 students receiving a diploma.
